First up Friday at the Ryder Cup: a showdown between the rookies and their nerves

CHASKA, Minn. — Everyone who’s ever played in a Ryder Cup has a story about trying to put the tee in the ground and the ball on the tee while vibrating like a tuning fork on the first hole, the first day.

Some stories are more colourful, like the rookie who said he was advised it might be an idea to wear bicycle clips around his ankles, in case of a … well, gastric emergency.

So it’s a nervous event.

Lee Westwood is playing in his 10th Ryder Cup this week at Hazeltine National, and because fully half of the Europeans’ 12-man team are rookies, he is being asked daily how he can help the first-timers get over the hard parts: the shakes, the hostile crowds, the out-of-body…
