TROON, Scotland — Phil Mickelson stopped at the glass-encased claret jug beside the first tee and kissed it with his fingertips.
Maybe Hollywood needed the footage for whenever they decide to make Phil The Thrill, starring Chris Hemsworth and directed by Quentin Tarantino.
Then he went out and birdied the first hole to Henrik Stenson’s bogey, and took the lead in the final round of the 145th Open Championship.
Sadly for the screenplay — and even sadder for the 46-year-old who may not have an unlimited number of chances to do something this special again — it was the last Mickelson saw of the lead all day.
