OAKMONT, Pa. — The board met in the conference room at Oakmont Country Club and the members were not happy.
“Harrumph,” said one. This was followed by a round of harrumphs. One member was silent. The chairman glared at him.
“I didn’t get a harrumph out of you,” he said. “You watch your a–.”
The first round of the 116th U.S. Open had been interrupted by thunderstorms three times, after more than an inch of rain fell overnight Wednesday. The course had been … well, playable. Infuriating.
